Situated on the U.S. Gulf Intracoastal Waterway just off the Mississippi River, the Inland Rivers Marine Terminal (IRMT) is a 60-acre intermodal facility of the Port of Greater Baton Rouge. The IRMT is strategically located at the hub of an extraordinary network connecting the U.S. heartland with international markets.
Import, export and domestic cargo transfer to barge, rail and truck are daily activities at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge's IRMT. Nearly 50 percent of all American markets are accessible by barge through the Mississippi Inland Waterway System, making the IRMT a cost-effective center for transporting goods. Compared to rail or truck transport, the IRMT can offer considerable cost savings through either container-on-barge or RO/RO barge services.
"The immediate need, following Katrina, to keep our supply chain intact allowed us to explore new ways to transport our coffee. By shipping the majority of our coffee by barge from the Port of New Orleans into the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, we know that we are supporting the economies of both cities."
